ASCO 2021 | Disease characteristics and outcomes for older versus younger adults with myeloma

Benjamin Derman, MD, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, discusses disease characteristics and outcomes for older patients with multiple myeloma in comparison to younger patients with multiple myeloma. Data from the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation CoMMpass registry was used in the analysis, including data from 853 patients under 70 and 290 patients over 70. Dr Derman reports that older patients were more likely to be International Scoring System (ISS) stage three, had lower estimated glomerular filtration rates and ECOG performance status. Older patients were also found to have a higher frequency of gain of 1q and t(14;20) compared to younger adults. Dr Derman gives an overview of treatment strategies in the two different groups and compares the rates of transplantation, as well as contrasting the response rates in these two subgroups and discussing impacts on survival. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2021 Virtual Meeting.
