Jonathan Keats, PhD, of the Translational Genomics Research Institute, Phoenix, AZ, talks on the importance of good practice during primary sample processing and enrichment techniques in multiple myeloma research. Dr Keats emphasizes the importance of documenting and standardizing the methods of sample collection, and states that even unexpected factors, such as the type of vacuum container used as an anti-coagulant, can have an impact on final results. Furthermore, the process of isolating samples requires standardized protocols to avoid cross-contamination between specimens, such as extensive washing procedures when using the same column during sample isolation. This interview took place during the 18th International Myeloma Workshop (IMW 2021) congress.
