COMy 2026 | Temporal trends in progression risk in smoldering myeloma: insights into a review

Heinz Ludwig, MD, Wilhelminen Cancer Research Institute, Vienna, Austria, discusses a recent review exploring temporal trends in progression risk in smoldering myeloma, noting that in earlier studies, many patients were miscategorized as high risk, primarily due to limited access to MRI and PET-CT. Prof. Ludwig is optimistic that future research will help refine the definition of high risk and, in the meantime, advises clinicians to monitor hemoglobin and paraprotein trends to determine whether a patient is eligible for therapy. This interview took place at the 12th World Congress on Controversies in Multiple Myeloma (COMy) in Paris, France.
