BSH 2023 | Dietary and microbiome evidence in myeloma & other plasma cell disorders

Urvi Shah, MD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City, NY, discusses evidence linking dietary patterns and microbiome diversity to outcomes in patients with plasma cell disorders, including multiple myeloma. Dr Shah cites data from her recent publication suggesting that healthier plant-based diets are associated with a reduced risk of developing myeloma, and mentions further small-scale studies associating healthy dietary patterns with lower risk of mortality in patients before a myeloma diagnosis. Dr Shah also notes studies linking higher microbiome diversity to improved survival outcomes in patients with plasma cell disorders. This interview took place at the 63rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Society for Haematology (BSH) 2023, held in Birmingham, UK.
