ASH 2022 | Epidemiology, characteristics and detection of transient M proteins in the iStopMM study

Sigurdur Kristinsson, MD, PhD, University of Iceland, Reykjavík, Iceland, presents results from the iStopMM study (NCT03327597), in which serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP), a free light chain (FLC) assay, and mass spectrometry were used to screen for transient M proteins and identify the epidemiology and characteristics of individuals with M spikes. Prof. Kristinsson describes the epidemiological findings, including an association of M spikes with certain drugs, malignancies and autoimmune disorders, and notes the importance of using highly sensitive methods when detecting these transient proteins. This interview took place at the 64th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition congress held in New Orleans, LA.
