Lydia Pecker, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, discusses the findings of a multinational retrospective study which investigated the differences in alloimmunization in pregnant patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) receiving either chronic or on-demand transfusions. The rate of alloimmunization was found to be low and did not differ between the two groups. Additionally, 83% of individuals who met components of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) guidelines for initiating chronic transfusion in pregnancy were identified, indicating that this treatment approach should be considered in a greater number of pregnant SCD patients. This interview took place at the 65th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
