Lydia Pecker, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, outlines the findings of a retrospective single-center analysis which aimed to increase knowledge on the safety profile and procedural risks of abortions in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) as only one prior paper exists in this area. Dr Pecker discusses the characteristics of patients undergoing abortions in the clinic, as well as the complications which were commonly observed. Although larger studies are needed to inform optimal abortion management in this patient population, there are no significant barriers at present which should prevent women with SCD from undergoing abortion procedures. This interview took place at the 65th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
