ASH 2023 | Rate of attendance at a young adult clinic in an adult sickle cell center

Lydia Pecker, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, discusses a study which investigated the rate of attendance of young adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) at the Young Adult Clinic (YAC) in the Sickle Cell Center for Adults at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, focusing on the first visit of the center, during which care was established in 89% of patients who attended. A staggering 99% of patients transitioning from pediatric care who were referred to the center attended this first appointment, which is encouraging due to the importance of the transition between pediatric and adult care in SCD. Dr Pecker outlines some risk factors which impacted the likelihood of attendance in individuals, as well as highlighting that few male patients engaged in care. This interview took place at the 65th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
