Nikhil Munshi, MD, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, discusses his keynote speech at the 2017 World Congress on Controversies in Multiple Myeloma (COMy) in Paris, France. Dr Munshi talks about the possibility of diagnosing myeloma and identifying specific subtypes using just circulating myeloma cells in the blood. There is a novel technology being developed that will measure the mass of cells when exposed to certain drugs, to see how many respond, and therefore accurately judge whether the patient would respond to treatment. There have also been promising results from recent CAR T-cell studies, showing outstanding responses even in patients with advanced disease. Dr Munshi states that there is hope to cure myeloma within the next few decades.
