Stephen Nimer, MD, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Health System, Miami, FL, discusses the potential impact of stem-cell-directed therapies in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), highlighting that these therapies may have a broad application across AML, particularly when used in combination with targeted therapies to reduce relapse rates and increase cure rates. This interview took place at the 8th International Workshop on Acute Leukemias (iwAL 2026), held in Boston, MA.

But as a result of studying that leukemia in great detail, we’re very interested in what is fundamental about leukemia and targeting that. Even for the targeted therapies, FLT3 inhibitors, inhibitors, menin inhibitors, sadly, people still relapse. Too many people relapse. And so we need to add another component. And I think that if we can target stem cells on top of these targeted therapies, we’ll get more cures.
