EBMT 2018 | The use of social media for career development: a physician’s perspective

Speaking from the 2018 European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) Annual Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, Khaled Ghanem, MD, from the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon, describes his experience of utilizing social media from a professional aspect in order to advance career development. Dr Ghanem points to the EBMT’s dedication in supporting young physicians, having launched the EBMT Young Ambassador Program last year.

I was invited by the EBMT to present my own experience on how social media and especially Twitter, have promoted my own career. I’m a young physician, I’m still a fellow, I’m setting up my future career, so they asked me to present my own experience with that.
I think for young physicians, social media might play a very important role in promoting their own career because they get connected to people who are not available in their country or even in their region, and they they might have work or training positions through social media...

I think for young physicians, social media might play a very important role in promoting their own career because they get connected to people who are not available in their country or even in their region, and they they might have work or training positions through social media.
So I got my first training position back in 2010 through a social media website. So one of my colleagues have posted that there’s a residency position at the University and I said yes, I was eligible to apply, I applied, I got the job like in one week, that was very exciting.
Also, through the EBMT, they are very supportive to young physicians, they have the young ambassador initiative, last year I applied, I got accepted, I got connected to many people here like Dr Mohty, Dr Navneet Majhail, and through that, I got an invitation to present my own experience this year through the social media session, as a representative of the young physician generations, to tell them how social media affects my career development.
