ASH 2023 | Single-cell transcriptomic analysis of B-ALL: leukemia cell state and genetic alterations

Ilaria Iacobucci, PhD, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, discusses a single-cell transcriptomic analysis of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), which revealed a correlation between leukemia cell state, genetic alterations, and clinical outcome. B-ALL samples were profiled using single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) and compared to a scRNA-seq reference map of normal human B-cell development. Unlike traditional bulk sequencing, this method allowed intratumor heterogeneity to be observed and the leukemia developmental state and cell of origin to be determined. This study allowed for the detection of cell populations which may predict disease progression and responses to therapy. This interview took place at the 65th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
