IACH 2021 | The role of the Pin1/PML/P53 axis in AML

Ali Bazarbachi, MD, of the American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon, outlines the role of the Pin1/PML/P53 axis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), discussing a study that investigated the effect of retinoic acid on the survival of chemotherapy-treated Nucleophosmin-1 (NPM-1)-mutated AML. Dr Bazarbachi reports that it was found that retinoic acid triggers NPM-1c degradation, P53 activation and growth arrest. Furthermore, it was found that the cause of the degradation is the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) gene, which is required is to initiate retinoic acid-driven NPM-1 degradation, P53 activation and cell death. This interview took place at the 4th Annual Meeting of the International Academy for Clinical Hematology (IACH), which took place virtually in 2021.
