SOHO 2023 | Updates to the ICC classification of AML

Robert Hasserjian, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, gives an overview of recent updates to the International Consensus Classification (ICC) of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr Hasserjian comments on the inclusion of additional genetic characteristics predefining AML, which can be utilized for diagnosing AML in patients with fewer than 20% blasts. Cases that were previously recognized as myelodysplasia-related AML have also been further classified by the genetic abnormality present. Dr Hasserjian also discusses changes made to the ICC’s diagnosis qualifiers, which allow for the incorporation of patient background and treatment history details. This interview took place at the Eleventh Annual Meeting of the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO 2023) held in Houston, TX.
