EBMT 2022 | Pathophysiology of GvHD

Ernst Holler, MD, University Hospital Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany, summarizes the main points from his presentation on chronic graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Prof Holler explains that the pathophysiology of chronic GvHD starts from the day of transplant and highlights the importance of early intervention to prevent the development of chronic GvHD. Moving forward, Prof. Holler explains that damage to the thymus or to the fibroblastic reticulum cells of lymph nodes prevents removal of auto-reactive T-cells. This then stimulates T follicular helper cells and aberrant B-cells, eventually leading to auto-activity in GvHD. This interview took place at the 48th Annual Meeting of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) 2022, which was held virtually.
