Pramila Krishnamurthy, MA, FRCPath, MRCP, PhD, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, discusses important factors to consider when selecting patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) for stem cell transplantation. Dr Krishnamurthy first comments on the importance of patient-related factors, including age and comorbidities, and then discusses disease-related factors that should be considered, including genomics and blast count. Although age is important, Dr Krishnamurthy explains that this is not a barrier to transplant, and further highlights that performance status and geriatric assessments should be considered when making this decision. To conclude, Dr Krishnamurthy comments on the importance of donor selection and timing of stem cell transplant. This interview took place at the 63rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Society for Haematology (BSH) 2023, held in Birmingham, UK.
