ESH MM 2018 | Smoldering multiple myeloma: what is the current definition & new screening programme

Speaking from the European School of Haematology (ESH) International Conference on Multiple Myeloma 2018, held in Mandelieu, France, Irene Ghobrial, MD, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, discusses the current definitions of smoldering multiple myeloma (MM) and high-risk smoldering MM. She emphasizes the need to incorporate criteria for genomic alterations into these definitions and highlights an upcoming screening project that her center will be running, using a Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) grant, which will screen those at high-risk of developing MGUS and smoldering MM, and investigate the underlying genetic predispositions for this.
