IMS 2026 | Blood-based technologies for diagnosis and monitoring in multiple myeloma

Shaji Kumar, MD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, discusses the future role of blood-based technologies for diagnosis, risk stratification and monitoring in multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders. He highlights circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and mass spectrometry as approaches that could reduce reliance on bone marrow assessment, while noting the need for further validation, regulatory approval and prospective studies to establish how these technologies should be used in clinical practice. This interview took place at the 23rd International Myeloma Society (IMS) Annual Meeting in Glasgow, UK.
