IMS 2026 | Whole genome sequencing of circulating tumor cells in multiple myeloma

Shaji Kumar, MD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, discusses the development of whole genome sequencing of circulating tumor cells as a potential approach for identifying genomic alterations associated with immunotherapy response and resistance in multiple myeloma. He highlights the potential to use peripheral blood to assess abnormalities such as TP53 and BCMA mutations while reducing reliance on repeated bone marrow biopsies, and discusses the validation, regulatory and clinical considerations needed for broader implementation. This interview took place at the 23rd International Myeloma Society (IMS) Annual Meeting in Glasgow, UK.
