Imelda Coyne, PhD from Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland discusses the value in involving children and adolescents in the decisions to be made beyond their treatment plan at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) in Valencia, Spain. By providing children with choices such as which arm to insert their cannula in, how they would prefer their medicine to be administered or when they wish to receive treatment, allows them to feel more engaged and in control. The idea of offering children choices has not always been accepted but Prof. Coyne is an advocate of this concept.
