Tandem Meetings 2023 | Exploring the perspectives of gbMSM on barriers and facilitators to stem cell donation

Jillian Schneidman, BSc, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, shares the key points of a study aiming to explore the perspectives of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) on obstacles and facilitators to stem cell donation to engage gbMSM as donors. To achieve this, focus groups were shown different types of multimedia aiming to engage gbMSM as stem cell donors. The study found that barriers to stem cell donation included lack of awareness about donation, exclusion from & stigma about donation, and a concern that gbMSM will not be treated well by the healthcare system. In contrast, facilitators included media content showing that gbMSM are wanted and needed as donors and that they will be treated well as donors. The results from this study can help run effective gbMSM donor recruitment campaigns and advance a more inclusive transplant system. This interview took place at the 2023 Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Meetings of ASTCT™ and CIBMTR® held in Orlando, FL.
