Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune reaction against platelets, driving their breakdown and resulting in excess bleeding. Paolo Gresele, MD, PhD, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy, discusses the impairment of megakaryocytes and their role in ITP. Recent studies have begun to elucidate the mechanisms which cause a reduction in platelet production from these cells. Prof. Gresele explains how autoantibodies in ITP prevent megakaryocyte maturation, migration, and proplatelet formation, and highlights the importance of this research in the identification of new treatment targets. This interview took place at the 31st Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), held in Montréal, Canada.
