EBMT 2023 | The value of patient-driven research

Natacha Bolaños, Lymphoma Coalition Europe, Madrid, Spain, discusses the importance of patient-driven research. Patient-driven research involves identifying the unmet needs of patients and incorporating their experiences and data into the design and implementation of clinical trials. This includes evidence-based advocacy, where umbrella patient organizations collect data on patient experiences through global patient surveys, which can be used to improve trial design by defining better inclusion criteria, and symptoms and adverse events that are relevant to patients. Patient involvement in research should occur early in the process to ensure that studies and products in development are relevant and interesting to patients. Patient-driven research is essential to improve not only survival but also the quality of life (QoL) for patients. This interview took place at the 49th Annual Meeting of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) held in Paris, France.
