EHA 2016 | An overview of the European Reference Networks and EuroBloodNet

Pierre Fenaux, MD, PhD of Saint-Louis Hospital & Paris Diderot University, Paris, France and Joan Lluis Vives-Corrons, MD, PhD from the Hospital Clinic Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain discuss the European Reference Networks (ERNs) at the European Hematology Association (EHA) 2016 Annual Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark. The European Commission (EC) has to approve networks before they become reference networks. At the basis of each network are the expert centers or health care providers. Prof. Fenaux points out that the ERNs will be important in hematology as it is a specialty with many diseases, which may be malignant or benign. Prof. Fenaux and Prof. Vives-Corrons further discuss the importance of working with other groups in hematology and the importance of having a network for all of hematology, which will be the EuroBloodNet once it has been accepted by the EC.
