E-selectin is involved in the progression of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), playing a key role in angiogenesis, thus making it a therapeutic target. In this interview, Marina Konopleva, MD, PhD, from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses the results of the clinical trial of the E-selectin inhibitor GMI-1271 in combination with high-dose cytarabine for relapsed/refractory and newly diagnosed elderly AML (NCT02306291). Excitingly, this drug has now been granted FDA breakthrough therapy designation.
