Gareth Morgan, MD, PhD, FRCP, FRCPath, NYU Langone, New York City, NY, discusses the research he and his team conducted to investigate possible genetic factors contributing to the observed three-fold higher incidence of multiple myeloma (MM) among people of African descent. Using whole genome sequencing (WGS) on cases from individuals of European and African origin, genomic features of myeloma were found to be largely consistent across groups. However, the genomes of patients of African origin appeared less complex, with lower APOBEC-mutational activity. This raises questions about whether genetic differences or structural societal factors, like environmental stressors, contribute to these disparities. This interview took place at the 21st International Myeloma Society (IMS) Annual Meeting, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
