ESH MPN 2026 | How to manage iron deficiency to improve outcomes in patients with polycythemia vera

Marta Sobas, MD, PhD, Wroclaw Medical University, Wroclaw, Poland, provides her recommendations for managing iron deficiency in patients with polycythemia vera (PV), outlining that this is typically driven by exaggerated erythropoiesis and repeated phlebotomy. Dr Sobas explains that iron supplementation can raise the need for phlebotomy; however, new agents such as rusfertide may act as a replacement, potentially resolving this issue. This interview took place at the ESH 11th Translational Research Conference on Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (ESH MPN 2026) in Estoril, Portugal.
