ASH 2020 | Using an animated patient’s guide to improve understanding of MDS

David Sallman, MD, Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, discusses an evaluation of an online animated educational program introduced to improve patients’ understanding of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Patients with MDS commonly report a lack of information about disease risk and treatment options. The ‘Animated Patient’s Guide to MDS’ (APG) was launched in 2018 to improve patient and caregiver understanding of MDS. In an analysis of this project, nearly 60,000 visitors were found to have used the APG. Of users who responded to questions on the website, 96% reported they would use the new information to better self-manage their MDS and 97% planned to discuss treatment options with their doctor. Patients reported learning new information about diagnosis, treatment options, and transplants. Ongoing monitoring of the program will improve understanding of how this format of educational material could benefit patients. This interview took place during the 62nd American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting and Exposition, 2020.
