Wally Smith, MD, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, highlights that implementing the biopsychosocial model of pain care for sickle cell disease (SCD) requires a multidisciplinary team approach similar to that used in cancer, diabetes, or hemophilia centers. Prof. Smith highlights his career-long efforts to establish these care teams for adults with SCD.
