ASH 2024 | Balancing treatment intervals and QoL in patients with multiple myeloma: patient perspectives

Anna Fleischer, MD, University Hospital Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany, comments on the importance of balancing treatment intervals and quality of life (QoL) in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), highlighting the findings from a study investigating patient perspectives. The study found that patients value long treatment-free intervals (TFIs) but would not be willing to trade a lower risk of disease recurrence for longer TFIs. Dr Fleischer notes that patients often miss out on family gatherings and holidays due to frequent hospital appointments and that hospital staff should ensure they are communicating in an empathetic manner to improve the experience for patients. This interview took place at the 66th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition, held in San Diego, CA.
