CAR-T Meeting 2022 | Supporting patients during CAR-T therapy

Michelle Kenyon, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, comments on the challenges faced by nurses in delivering chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy to patients. Patients who are referred for CAR-T therapy are often unwell, and their physical health can further decline after cell infusion. It is essential that nurses are responsive and provide sufficient support whilst accurately monitoring the patient during this time. In addition, nurses should have training and experience in managing CAR-T-related side effects such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity as these can be quite challenging for patients, and they should also support patients during transitions from the hospital ward to the intensive care unit (ICU) and vice versa. Finally, it is important for nurses to build a relationship with their patients and communicate with carers. This interview took place at the EBMT-EHA 4th European CAR T-cell Meeting which was held virtually in 2022.
