Michael Boeckh, MD, PhD, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Washington, WA, discusses various secondary respiratory tract infections patients may receive after stem cell transplantation, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Infections such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus and parainfluenza viruses may negatively affect outcomes and Dr Boeckh highlights research in the epidemiology and management of these diseases, as well as how the immune system controls infection. This interview took place at the 7th Congress on Controversies in Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies (COSTEM) in Berlin, Germany.
