CAR-T Meeting 2024 | The role of AI in medicine and how acceptance and trust in AI strategies can be fostered

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in many areas of medicine to aid healthcare professionals (HCPs) in decision-making. For example, the EU project AIDPATH (AI-powered, Decentralized Production for Advanced Therapies in the Hospital) is a project for developing CAR T-cell therapy by integrating patient-related data and biomarkers into the therapy process using AI. However, the widespread implementation of AI is associated with challenges regarding data privacy, accountability, equity, and fairness, which must be addressed.

In this interview, Carmen Sanges, PhD, University Hospital Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany, discusses how these challenges can be overcome and how trust and acceptance in AI strategies can be fostered. Dr Sanges highlights that the top priority should be transparency and explainability so HCPs understand how AI algorithms arrive at the decisions made. Robust data privacy measures must be emphasized, and patients must be reassured that stringent standards are maintained to ensure patient confidentiality. Furthermore, maintaining accountability, equity, and fairness and encouraging a collaborative approach between all stakeholders are also crucial for the successful implementation of AI. This interview took place at the EBMT-EHA 6th European CAR T-cell Meeting in Valencia, Spain.
