SOHO 2026 | Will MRD eradication become a routine treatment goal in AML?

Farhad Ravandi, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses the future role of measurable residual disease (MRD) eradication in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr Ravandi suggests that as AML therapies become more effective and potentially curative, MRD negativity may become a routine treatment goal, as seen in other hematologic malignancies. This interview took place at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO 2026) in Houston, TX.

In ALL or APL, a subset of AML, we have excellent therapy that can be curative, and that’s where we always look for negative MRD. I think that would be the same in AML. You will have such effective therapies that you could really talk about cure. And in that situation, you would definitely want to have a negative MRD and as I mentioned earlier, a broad negative MRD, not just a single mutation MRD.
