Tandem Meetings 2023 | Challenges in finding a stem cell transplant donor in ethnic and racial minorities

Molly Tokaz, MD, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle, WA, comments on obstacles associated with finding a matched stem cell transplant (SCT) donor in people from ethnic and racial minorities, highlighting the results of a recent study that evaluated the probability of finding an unrelated donor match in people from different ethnic backgrounds in the US. Dr Tokaz also highlights the financial and logistical challenges of SCT and emphasizes the importance of improving data collection systems to evaluate SCT trends in all regions of the world. This interview took place at the 2023 Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Meetings of ASTCT™ and CIBMTR® held in Orlando, FL.
