Erfan Nur, MD, PhD, Amsterdam University Medical Center, Amsterdam, Netherlands, discusses complications in sickle cell disease (SCD). SCD is characterized by vaso-occlusive crisis and chronic anemia. In addition, due to intravascular hemolysis and microvascular occlusion leading to continuous oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular damage, patients experience gradual complications in most vital organs, including the heart, the kidneys, the lungs, the liver, and the brain. This interview took place at the 48th Annual Meeting of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) 2022, which was held virtually.
