LLM 2021 | ITP update: diagnosis, treatment & COVID-19 vaccines

James Bussel, MD, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY, gives an update on the diagnosis and treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is often challenging as there is no specific testing, and there is a lack of categorization into subgroups leading to identical treatment strategies for all patients. Regarding ITP management, there have been new additions to the ITP armamentarium as well as relevant changes in established treatments. For instance, there has been a significant focus on reducing the dose and duration of steroids, which involves starting second-line agents earlier in the treatment course. Finally, Prof. Bussel discusses ITP related to COVID-19 vaccination, including de novo ITP and ITP exacerbation. This interview took place at the Lymphoma, Leukemia & Myeloma Congress 2021.
