ASCAT 2024 | The priorities when treating SCD in SSA

Leon Tshilolo, MD, PhD, Centre Hospitalier Monkole, Kinshasa, DR Congo, comments on the priorities when treating patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). An accurate diagnosis in infancy or early childhood is needed to ensure the implementation of prophylactic measures to reduce the risk of malaria and severe infections, improving patient outcomes. Prof. Tshilolo highlights that these measures are readily accessible to patients, even in rural locations or areas without highly trained healthcare professionals. This interview took place at the 19th Annual Scientific Conference of the Academy for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia (ASCAT 2024) in London, UK.
