EBMT 2022 | Pregnancy outcomes after HSCT during childhood

Tamara Diesch, MD, University Children’s Hospital Basel, Basel, Switzerland, comments on the results of a study evaluating the pregnancy outcomes of patients who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) during childhood. The study found that the conception rate was lower in transplanted patients, and patients conditioned with total body irradiation (TBI) required reproductive medicine more often. In addition, cesarean delivery was performed more frequently in women who had been treated with TBI. The study also demonstrated that the miscarriage rate in this population was similar to that of a healthy population. Overall, this study shows that it is possible to become pregnant after HSCT and TBI with the help of reproductive medicine. This interview took place at the 48th Annual Meeting of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) 2022, which was held virtually.
