BSH 2024 | Continuity of care for patients with hematological predispositions to AML
Anupama Rao, MD, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK, shares insights into examples of recognized hematological predispositions to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) – Runt-related transcription factor 1 familial platelet disorder (RUNX1-FPD) and Shwachman-Diamond syndrome. Considering RUNX1-FPD, which is often diagnosed in newborn babies, Dr Rao reflects on the key clinical questions that must be answered and the necessity of continuity of care and disease monitoring from infancy to adulthood due to the risk of transformation to AML. In the case of Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a rare, multi-system disorder of inherited bone marrow failure, Dr Rao emphasizes the importance of coordinated multi-specialist care.
