In this interview, Subarna Chakravorty, MBBS, MRCPCH, FRCPath, PhD, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, emphasizes the significant contribution of sickle cell disease (SCD) to the global burden of disease, and outlines some initiatives for its management, which were included in the Lancet Commission on SCD. Dr Chakravorty hopes that the commission will lead healthcare organizations and countries (especially low- or middle-income countries) to consider the importance of developing and implementing these initiatives, in order to limit the prevalence of the disease and improve quality of life for SCD patients.
