Lisa Hicks, MD, MSc, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Canada, discusses the role age plays in determining COVID-19 outcomes and treatment patterns in patients with hematologic malignancies. Analysis from the ASH Research Collaborative (RC) COVID-19 Registry for Hematology revealed that the rate of symptomatic and asymptomatic cancer was similar across age ranges, with reported symptoms including fever, coughing, and shortness of breath being consistent across patients. However, the presence of co-morbidities was increased in older patients and when taking into account gender, younger women tended to fare better, whilst older men had inferior outcomes. This interview took place at the 63rd ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition congress in Atlanta, GA.
