EHA 2021 | Risk factors and outcomes of Klebsiella pneumoniae infection before and after allo-HCT

Eleni Gavriilaki, MD, PhD, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece, gives an overview of a study of the risk factors and outcomes of Klebsiella pneumoniae infection before and after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (allo-HCT). Dr Gavriilaki reports that allo-HCT is feasible in patients with Klebsiella pneumoniae, however infection impairs survival outcomes. Patients who had a Klebsiella pneumoniae infection prior to allo-HCT were found to be more likely to develop an infection after allo-HCT, and this was independently associated with the presence of graft-versus-host disease. This interview took place at the virtual European Hematology Association (EHA) Congress 2021.
