Academic History

Maria-Victoria Mateos, MD, PhD, received her medical degree from the University of Valladolid in Valladolid, Spain. Dr Mateos then completed her residency in hematology at the University Hospital of Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain, where she also completed a PhD focused on p16 gene methylation in multiple myeloma.

Dr Mateos is a Consultant Physician in Hematology. She is also responsible for coordinating the clinical trials unit at the University Hospital of Salamanca and is the Director of the Myeloma Program. Dr Mateos holds membership in several professional societies. She served on the European Hematology Association (EHA) Scientific Program Committee and Advisory Board, as well as on the American Society of Hematology’s Scientific Committee on Plasma Cell Diseases, and is an associate editor for Annals of Haematology. In 2015, she was elected as a councillor to the board of the EHA.

Speaking on clinical trials in elderly myeloma patients and smoldering myeloma patients

As a clinical trial coordinator, Dr Mateos has conducted many clinical trials in elderly myeloma patients and patients with smoldering myeloma. Having published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, including some key references in the field. Dr Mateos contributed to the educational sessions of EHA 2012, ASH 2013, and ASCO 2015. Her areas of interest include multiple myeloma, the biology of plasma cells, and new drug development.
