Academic history

Cem Akin, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Previously, he held the position of Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medicine, Boston, MA, as well as establishing and leading the Mastocytosis Center at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA.

Dr Akin obtained his MD at Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1988, followed by a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Louisville, Louisville, KY, in 1995. He was selected to serve as President of the Michigan Allergy & Asthma Society (MAAS) in July 2019.

Speaking on mastocytosis and anaphylaxis

Dr Akin’s research focuses extensively on mast cell disorders, especially mastocytosis, a topic on which he has also written and published an eBook, and anaphylaxis. He is involved in clinical trials, including acting as Principal Investigator of the recent PIONEER trial investigating the use of avapritinib in patients with indolent systemic mastocytosis.
