Ghayas Issa, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, presents on the initial recognition of differentiation syndrome (DS) in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) treated with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). Dr Issa explains that no universally accepted criteria exist for diagnosing DS, but the Frankel criteria for diagnosis and the Montesinos criteria for severity remain in use, with DS most often occurring during the first cycle. He emphasizes the importance of starting steroids early, and that there is consensus that prophylactic steroids confer clinical benefit in APL. This presentation took place at the 8th International Workshop on Acute Leukemias (iwAL) in Cambridge, MA.
