SOHO 2026 | Can persistent MRD negativity be considered therapy failure in AML? ELN definitions and relapse risk

Farhad Ravandi, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses whether persistent measurable residual disease (MRD) can be considered therapy failure in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr Ravandi explains that definitions of MRD failure are still being refined, including by the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) MRD working group, and highlights the need for a standard definition. He emphasizes that MRD recurrence is associated with a high likelihood of relapse, but this may vary by AML subtype, so it is important to stay in communication with experts in the field. This interview took place at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO 2026) in Houston, TX.
