SOHO 2026 | Refining the role of MRD in AML: predicting relapse and the goal of MRD negativity

Farhad Ravandi, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, discusses the role of measurable residual disease (MRD) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr Ravandi explains that, given the different MRD assays and AML subtypes, MRD cannot be viewed as a single term, and highlights efforts by the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) MRD working group to refine its use in AML. He also discusses the role of MRD in predicting morphological relapse, highlighting that in the future, achieving MRD negativity will be a therapeutic goal when aiming to cure patients. This interview took place at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO 2026) in Houston, TX.
