ERIC 2020 | The past and present of immunoglobulin genes in CLL

Andreas Agathangelidis, PhD, Center for Research and Technology Hellas, Thermi, Greece, discusses how immunogenetic research in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has developed over the past 30 years. In the 1990s, somatic mutations were first found in immunoglobulin genes in CLL cells. 10 years later, two studies independently found that the mutations in the immunoglobulin genes had a prognostic impact and that they were a robust maker. Now, patients can be classified more accurately by identifying clinical and biological profiles, which can be utilized to improve clinical decision making. This interview took place during the European Research Initiative on CLL (ERIC) International Virtual Meeting 2020.
