ECCO 2017 | Challenges in cancer care: why we need to coordinate a worldwide effort against cancer

Franco Cavalli • 27 Jan 2017

Franco Cavalli, MD, FRCP from the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland, Bellinzona, Switzerland discusses challenges in cancer care. In Europe, we can see a division in terms of outcome between Eastern and Western Europe, which is due to a lack of preventative measures and limited access to treatments. If you look at worldwide trends, we are facing a cancer epidemic in the developing world as Prof. Cavalli explains. This means that the death rate due to cancer is increasing worldwide. Therefore, even though we are making headway in terms of wining the fight against cancer from a scientific point of view, from a socio-economic point of view, we will lose this fight. Prof. Cavalli explains that we need a global fund for cancer and a organization, such as the the World Oncology Forum, is needed in order to coordinate a worldwide effort against cancer.
Recorded at the European Cancer Congress of the European Cancer Organisation (ECCO) 2017 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
